A famous set of long and short katana, heirlooms of the Gen ji clan and those feature in The Tale of Heike. When Minamoto—no—Yorimasa slew a yokai called "Nue" that materialised from a dark cloud during his guard duty at the Imperial Court, the emperor rewarded him with Shishi—o ("Lion King "). It is the longer sword of the pair. Shishi—o's name is a mystery and it bears no inscription, but from the forging method used it is thought to have originated in Yamato province. The shorter sword, Hone—kui ("Bone Eater"), was used by one of Yorimasa's men to deliver the finishing blow to the nue.
