Oda Nobunaga was a daimyo during the Warring States period who dominated central Japan, including the capital, Kyoto. He rose to the official position of Minister of the Right in the court hierarchy, and was sometimes known as a version of that title, but was more commonly called the Overlord. His rule began with the conquest of Owari province. A miraculous victory at the Battle of Okehazama expanded his influence dramatically, letting him take Kyoto and Sakai. Conquest of the entire nation seemed within his grasp, but he was betrayed by his own vassals and met his end at Honnoji temple. His revolutionary tactics included the use of firearms, and this flexible, rational approach changed the course of history by paving the way for the rise of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and other successors.

Nobunaga was insatiably curious, particularly about what lay beyond Japan's borders. He took great pleasure in the world globes and clocks presented to him by Christian missionaries, and showed favour to the foreigner Yasuke. Once his conquest of Japan seemed certain, he gleefully looked forward to venturing even further afield to see what else the world held. To help him cross the seas and satisfy this curiosity, he decided to make use of the spirit stones — in other words, Amrita. This would prove the trigger for his betrayal by Akechi Mitsuhide, who prioritised a harmonious social order over innovation and discovery.
