A cross—shaped spear used prominently in the Hozoin school of spear fighting. It was modified by the warrior monk Hozoin Inei of Kofuku Temple in Yamato province to enable a greater range of fighting techniques. The inspiration for adding the cross—hilt is said to have come when he saw a crescent moon reflected in a pool of water.
