A helmet with a thick iron bowl from which "shikoro" neck guards are suspended. The visor that covers the face to below the eye line is modelled on a long-nosed goblin, giving the wearer a demonic air. This armour was used by the Obsidian Samurai, the samurai of African origin who served under Oda Nobunaga. The Obsidian Samurai arrived in Japan as a servant of an Italian missionary. When he met Nobunaga, the warlord took a liking to him and employed him in his military. He was a huge man, lauded as having the strength of ten men. This equipment was commissioned by Nobunaga especially to accommodate the Obsidian Samurai's large frame.
This do features an open chest area so as not to hinder the wearer's well—developed muscles. The Nanban—style abdominal region of the do is adorned with the Oda family crest. The arm portions differ between left and right, with the left shoulder sporting a large iron top sleeve.
Kote featuring a heavy right—hand piece, modelled on a Western gauntlet, and a left—hand one made from lightweight cloth that is designed to expose the fingers.
Leg protectors with thick hemp to cover the lower half of the body, on top of which an iron "haidate, " or thigh armour piece, hangs down over the left hip.
Shin guards consisting of a hinged pair of iron plates that close to form a cylindrical shape. The "tateage" knee protectors are adorned with the Oda family crest.
